Project
The Tank Museum holds the largest and most important collection of armoured fighting vehicles in the world.
The new display hall is a key element of The Tank Museum’s £16m Heritage Lottery Fund sponsored redevelopment project, entitled At Close Quarters.
The display hall has been designed as a quarter circle which fits between the existing buildings and the curve of the road forming part of the site boundary. The architecture of the display hall is minimalist and functional, featuring a radial saw tooth roof to provide natural daylight. A control tower will provide the point of control and monitor safety for activities involving tanks in the external Arena.
Roof Specification
0.7 mm Bright white steel liner with clear VCL over. ST L150 Clips, Corus Non-rigid insulation, and either 333/65 or 500/65 Kalzip to roof and wall areas
Observations
A very clear design brief from inception meant this project would be special and challenging in many ways. From the design of the gallery wall / roof interface, the “Saw Tooth Roofs” to the cladding of the fantastic control tower! Getting all contractors on board at an early stage, ensuring effective partnering and shared ownership would prove to be Key in the success of this project.
The Welded Solutions
Gable (UK) Limited employed Sureweld to provide many services on this project, including cutting and forming external cranked sheets to the Gallery wall, various soaker details and many types of welded interfaces. The key to the satisfaction of the client on this project would lead to some of the neatest welding seen by many in the industry. Access to many areas of this project was to be a challenge, particularly to the Control tower roof, where a 135 ft MEWP was used to add the final touches to the weathering of this roof.
