Corus Kalzip
“TEAMKAL Conference”
Sureweld and Roof Ltd again attended the annual Corus
Kalzip “TEAMKAL Conference” this year held at the
De Vere Carden Park Hotel.
This was the 10th anniversary of the Conference, and unique
in a number of ways, not least in that it was the first year
Sureweld & Roof Ltd were privileged to sponsor the event.
One of the speakers of the day was Kriss Akabusi, famous
for his achievements in the world of Athletics where his greatest
individual triumph was his Gold Medal in the 1990 European
Championships when he also beat David Hemery’s 22 year
old British Record.
Our company stand displaying up to date information on projects,
both current and completed, along with additional information
on our health and safety was
erected outside the main conference hall, and on hand to answer
any questions were Darren Powell, Managing Director of Sureweld
& Roof Ltd, James Wallace, Operations Manager and Alan
Scriven, Contracts Co-ordinator.
In addition this date coincided with the launch of this web
site. For further information please see the Contact tab.

Health and
Safety - Work at Height
Now in force since April 6th 2005. As far as construction
companies are concerned there is no significant change when
working above 2m although the hierarchy for control has been
more clearly defined. Up to 2m the risk assessment approach
should be used to consider whether controls are required and
the extent of those controls.

Health and Safety - Summer Drive for
CSCS
A major summer re-launch of the campaign to qualify the workforce
is being planned in a bid to reverse declining renewal rates
for the CSCS Skills Card. According to CSCS data, the number
of MCG cardholders fell 4.5% from 33,651 to 32,173 between September
and December 2004 after 2 years of rapid growth. CSCS are looking
for contractors to put more effective auditing measures in place
to over come some evidence of resistance to the supply chain.

Health and Safety - Cover up in the Sun
If employees are exposed to UV in the recent hot weather, it
is advisable for them to protect themselves with factor 30 sunscreen.
With the rates of skin cancer rising it is essential that this
issue is highlighted. Also encourage them to drink plenty of
water to keep hydrated don’t wait until you are thirsty
before you get a drink. The advice is little and often throughout
the day. Sureweld & Roof Ltd has recently sourced fixed
sun protection dispensers to be installed in all site vehicles.
We believe sun protection must be part of PPE and to this end
it is our responsibly as employers to ensure the safe working
conditions for our operatives.

Health and Safety - Fall Arrest Harness
warning
The HSE have issued a warning on the use of fall arrest equipment
after a worker was killed when his harness failed. The warning
focuses on the use of energy absorbing twin tailed lanyards,
which connect body harnesses to anchoring points and reduce
the impact of falls. It is vital that everyone using twin tailed
lanyards understands the manufacturers instructions. You must
remember when one of the lanyard legs is attached to the anchor
point, the second leg should not be attached to the user’s
harness or clothing, the fall warning can also be seen on www.hse.gov.uk/press/2004/e04168.htm

Sureweld & Roof Ltd - Training
@ WRFC !!
In June we held a Health and Safety training day
with our Health and Safety management organisation Fieldside
Health and Safety Management
This provided the perfect opportunity for everyone in the
company, from the Managing Director and all the office staff,
to all the on site operatives to engage in an open debate
on pressing issues, not to mention the intensive refresher
training on:
- Fire Prevention on Construction Sites
- Working at Heights (with new regulations)
- Safety Harness training
- Personal Protective Equipment
Through a series of videos and answer and question sessions
the above modules were covered ensuring that everyone understood
any new regulations and were fully compliant with everything
that is expected of them whilst on any site around the country.
All of our on site operatives now hold these certificates
and carry them with them at all times.
As is the way with open forums, several issues of serious
interest were raised and these are now being looked at with
a view to the next training session that we will be holding
in the New Year.

Sureweld & Roof Ltd - Links with our
Community
For several years Sureweld & Roof Ltd has been an avid
supporter of Worcester Rugby Football Club. It was with great
excitement that we watched the Warriors at the end of the
2003/2004 Session when they were promoted to the Premier league.
Sureweld & Roof Ltd as a company also support and sponsor
one of the players and around the ground bill board’s
showing the company’s name and details can be seen!
It is hopeful that another link with the local community
will be put into place for the up and coming football season
by the sponsoring of a local football team.
